Why Soccer? Why would a girl travel to Greece and bring soccer balls? The refugees need so many supplies for survival. They need food, shelter, hygiene products, health care, education and the list goes on. Why soccer?
I traveled around the world with a soccer ball and a hackey sac. All I had to do was pass the ball to someone and they would pass it back. It didn’t matter that we spoke a different language, that our skin was a different color and gender didn't matter. It brought all ages together. It brought laughter, exercise, joy, teamwork, camaraderie and a feeling of togetherness. I will never forget the high-fives and the hugs I received playing with so many different cultures. I left soccer balls and hackey sacs around the world. Soccer is a universal language on its own. Having a ball when I traveled enriched my experience beyond words and my wish and hope is that this tiny gesture will enrich the lives of people that have lost everything and bring them together in a fun and healthy way.
When kids are running around joyful and playing, it inevitably brings a smile to others faces. When you hear someone laughing in hysterics, you can’t help it, you naturally join in. This is my hope, that soccer balls will bring joy and laughter.
I am starting a drive to collect soccer balls (to be purchased in Greece to support the local economy) and pumps to bring over to the refugee camps in Greece in September 2016. Soccer has united the world and my mission is PEACE, JOY & SOCCER. I want to spread joy and create unity and connection by bringing children and adults of any nationality together through sports and exercise, one soccer ball at a time!
